What Clients Says

“Familiarity with cowboy builders having bred contempt for those in the trade, I was long hesitant about having a much-needed extension added to my home. However, after speaking to former happy clients (who mentioned beautiful bookcases) I engaged Scott Johnstone to carry out the work. It involved the demolition of an old conservatory to make way for a new extension. Covid, and its accompanying delays, meant that work started in the middle of winter; not a joyous prospect as I live in the windiest part of Scotland. However, Scott and Dave boarded up and insulated the opening so well that my fears proved groundless.

Every member of Scott’s team, from bricklayer to final painter, was highly skilled and all work was executed to an exemplary standard.

Scott and Dave were always willing to discuss ideas and, where necessary, offer alternative suggestions. Once work was complete Scott was happy to advise on paint colours too, taking into account my own preferences. There was one alarming moment when he thought a black and white ceiling could look good! Fortunately, this was but a temporary aberration and he came to his senses eventually. Then Scott talks nonsense DON’T PANIC – a coffee usually does the trick! Scott’s woodworking skills are those of a true craftsman; he is a perfectionist who justifiably takes pride in his work. His assistant, Dave, is not bad either for one so young!

Work progressed so smoothly that I asked for a number of other things to be done as well. WARNING! If you employ Scott Johnstone you will be so impressed that you may well ask for more than you originally planned! I can unequivocally recommend Scott and his whole team. Whether it’s for the construction of a building or simply a bookcase, you will be hard-pressed to find a better or more reliable team. Scott and Dave’s good humour made them both a pleasure to have on site.”

“We asked Scott to provide costed proposals for the construction of a large singlestorey extension to our period Cat. C listed stone-built house. The plans stipulated several non-standard features including a hip roof, natural roof slating to match the house, bespoke sliding sash windows, a differentiated floor level from the main house, a natural slate floor and restricted access for large vehicles.

We were impressed by Scott’s commitment to the project from the outset and the serious and thoughtful way in which he drew up a proposal that reflected our requirements but was realistically and competitively costed. Importantly Scott then assisted us greatly with further planning and decision-making and helped make the whole project relatively stress-free.

Whilst Scott and Dave carried out all the joinery functions and many other tasks themselves and were at all times a pleasure to have on site, the sub-contractors, where necessary, were known and trusted and Scott took personal responsibility for coordinating and overseeing the work. The whole team was enthusiastic, considerate and keen to deliver what we wanted.

Overall the quality of the work was excellent and there were many unexpected additional refinements and attention to detail that we came to recognise as characteristic of Scott’s thoroughly professional attitude and his pride in his work. We are very pleased with the finished result and happy to give our wholehearted recommendation.”

“Renovation work on an old building or new building work in ones existing property is always fraught with thousands of opportunities for things to go wrong! Despite warnings from Kevin McCloud of “Grand Designs” fame (and others) many of us still attempt it! It is especially difficult if one is overseas at the time and therefore not able to be closely involved. Also not knowing the builder you are about to entrust your life savings to with a request to make your house dreams come true is a bit of a risk (to put it mildly!).

We need not have worried. Scott Johnstone and his team of fine workmen were all that could have been hoped for. They arrived promptly each morning and got stuck straight into the work (we knew this because unbeknown to Scott the neighbours were keeping a close eye on proceedings!) The job progressed on time and importantly to budget, in association with the surveyor who was employed to manage the project as we were away.

When we finally returned from overseas towards the end of the build/conversion we were delighted with the very high standard of working, the meticulous attention to detail delivered by Scott and his team – from bookcases to kitchen to shelves and doors to insulation, plumbing, electrics and window fitting. Scott project managed all of the associated painters, electricians, plumbers, delivery of wood, paint, tiles etc etc with ease and sensible timings to allow completion to be on time – and to budget.

We can honestly say that if you want a good job done to a very high standard we have no hesitation in recommending Scott and his dedicated team. We are more than satisfied and are delighted with our totally transformed home. In short, “highly recommended”, one could not find better.

“Johnstone Joinery did some amazing work converting an underused room into new sleepover accommodation for our Independent Living Support Staff. Staff were very courteous and informative and completed the work to a very high standard. We would not hesitate to engage Johnstone Joinery for any future work and would strongly recommend them.”

“Johnstone Joinery have refitted our kitchen, bathroom and en-suite. Their workmanship, time keeping and care taken with keeping the property clean and tidy both during and on completion of work was very good. I can say without doubt they are hardworking, polite and can recommend the to anyone who requires any work to be carried out”
